The Shams 1 plant will use Schott PTR 70 absorber tubes. This is the second generation of PTR 70 absorber tubes developed by Schott, and they benefit from reduced heat losses due to a lower emissivity.
The PTR 70 has been supplied to the 64 MW Nevada Solar One (completed in 2007) in the United States and to the first parabolic trough power plants in Europe: the Andasol 1 and 2 in Spain, each with a 50 MW capacity (completed in 2009 and 2010 respectively). This second generation PTR 70 reportedly delivers improved reliability. Schott, of Germany, specializes in sophisticated glass products and is the main provider of glass tubes for absorber tubes.
